Erykah Badu and an unbelievable day

Erykah Badu lives somewhere between my pubic bone and my navel.  That’s the house of the Splenic Chakra, #2 – it’s about friendliness, creativity, sexuality, emotions and intuition on the gut level.  It’s influenced by how emotions were expressed or suppressed in childhood and is the sexual center for women.  Ms. Badu is a recent addition to my playlist and I have happily used her debut (1997) CD”Baduizm”  to teach my classes of late.

Each and every song fires up that 2nd Chakra.  (Look out world, I’m repressed, ready to express – here I come!!)  This morning my students and I found ourselves led to backbending during the energizing class and thanks to Miz Badu I was electrified all day, and what a day it was.

Here are just the highlights:

  • Taught a class.  (My. Very. Favorite. Thing.)
  • Received a Zen Rock Garden as an unexpected gift from a student friend.  (made my day!!)
  • Went to work.  Came home.
  • Survived a tornado.  Patio furniture did not.
  • Learned how to hook-up and operate a generator with my husband coaching me from 600 miles away.
  • Made grilled pannini sandwiches in my den for dinner.  (Generator only powers certain outlets/appliances)  Have griddle, will travel.
  • Retrieved my son from baseball practice and picked up the necessary medicinal BOW (bottle of wine) to get through Virginia heat and humidity without AC.  (waaaah!, I know – what a whiner!)
  • Experienced the miracle of power coming back on.

Lyrics from Erykah Badu’s On and On

What a day, what a day, what a day….

Oh my my my I’m feeling high

My moneys gone I’m all alone to much oooh

The world is turnin’

Oh what a day What a day what a day

Peace and blessings manifest with every lesson learn, If your knowledge were your wealth then it would be well-earned

The last line is my fav.  It relates to my new approach in choosing happiness.  I am training myself to notice what’s good FIRST in a situation and then acknowledge that other pieces exist too.  Peace and blessings manifest.

For example in this head stand my first observation would be that my head neck and shoulders to my belly button (Badu’s dwelling) are correctly aligned and my core appears strong and stable.  Peace and blessings manifest.

Headstand after a run. Everybody does it!

Istead of:  My thighs are so thick, no wonder my legs appear to be floating around willy-nilly from my hip flexors to my heels.  I don’t have a cool yoga room, there’s probably dog hair all in my scalp from the rug.  Cripes.  I might notice opportunities for improvement but first I should take in that I AM DOING A HEADSTAND AT 43 AND IT’S PRETTY WELL EXECUTED!!!

Off the mat, I might notice I have a generator and my health.  My children and home are safe.  We weathered a nasty storm quite well.  Peace and blessings manifest.

Instead of:  I’m hot.  I can’t do laundry or vacuum (and that’s a bad thing?!?!).  I have so much clean up to do.

Erykah Badu would have pulled out some neo soul lyric, combined it with a pumpin’ bass and had me dancing and gyrating as I cleaned up the debris all over my yard.  I have my own soul but I don’t mind sharing my second chakra with her:

She’s just cool.  As is my house now.  Thanks Virginia Power.  Peace and blessings manifest.

It’s going to be a great day.
